D&B superhero delivers his latest opus. ‘Condition’ is concerned with achieving a “more light hearted approach” but he couldn’t stop “making the deeper material” so you get thirteen tracks of deep-but-light emosh D&B. Highlights have to be the darting ruffige of ‘Garbage Man’, his gruff, stubbly hardstepper ‘Schlager’, and the contemplative, hand-on-chin keys and strings of ‘Windows’, or the Amit styled halfstep rollers ‘Blackhole Dub’ and ‘No More’.

Brand new music from ST Files, if you haven’t heard of him before check out some of the stuff he’s done with Marcus Intalex under the alias MIST especially a song called ‘Midnight’. This ones forthcoming on a new label started by ST Files himself called Grey Audio and will be the flip to a tune called ‘Falling Down’ featuring the talents of Calibre.

Dbridge’s first full solo 12” of 2011 is a suitably special effort for Skream’s Disfigured Dubz label. These aren’t necessarily dancefloor tracks - that’s not to say they couldn’t be skilfully used in the right moment - but they are exquisite bits of modern UK Bass music. A-side is ‘City Of Lost Souls’, a melancholy minimal stepper’s rhythm suffused with gliding pads and a heart-breaking central motif lifted from a pivotal scene in Dbridge’s ongoing internal sci-fi odyssey. Flipside is ‘Discord’, a knowing melodic nod to Ae’s majestic ‘Dropp’ augmented by flickering, pointillist D&B patterns. Really lovely.

The Brookes Brothers debut album is as suburban as chips. Essentially the kind of very familiar up front drum and bass that turns dancefloors into scenes of sweaty, non-violent carnage, it’s manufactured specifically for chiselled, impossibly pretty tattooed working class boys and girls to grapple with each other in states of hedonistic abandon. Without any aspirations to either sophistication or originality, the current Dons of this scene may be Chase & Status, but here the massive, technicolour samples and relentless amen breaks suspend everything in an almost constant state of breakbeat frenzy. And at no point does anyone seem like they want to go home.

Hailing from the Midlands, UK, Jakwob is currently working on his debut album, and is very much in-demand as the producer of the moment. He’s redefining the experimental, dubstep, and electronic scenes, taking strands of each style and twisting them into a new sound that is very much his own.
